＜p＞＜br /＞ Triplanetary is a science fiction book and space opera by E. E. Smith. It was first serialized in the magazine Amazing Stories in 1934. After the original four novels of the Lensman series were published, Smith expanded and reworked Triplanetary into the first of two prequels (the second prequel was a new original novel, First Lensman). It was published in book form in 1948 by Fantasy Press.＜br /＞ The novel covers several episodes in an eons-long human breeding project by the super-intelligences of the Arisians. This alien race is breeding two genetic lines to become the ultimate weapon in Arisia's cosmic war with their arch-enemies, the Eddorians. The initial chapters cover the Kinnison genetic line during the fall of Atlantis and Nero's reign in Rome. This original publication brings us to a distant planet inhabited by a highly developed aquatic race called the Nevians. They have managed to harness the atomic power of iron and have an enormous need for the metal to generate energy, but their planet has virtually no iron reserves. They build a spaceship to venture into the universe and find iron. Eventually they discover that Earth has huge amounts of iron and the Nevians start to extract all the iron out of Pittsburgh with a special ray. This ray shoots into the city and immediately vaporizes and removes any iron from the buildings, machines, earth, and even from human blood. This is one of the most energetic books I have read. Yes, it is pure pulp fiction in the non-Quentin Terantino sense of the word, but it was a powerful page turner. Every page was super-charged, and every chapter left you wanting more! ＜p＞ E. E. Doc Smith is one of the giants of SF, and one of its greatest popularizers. He doesnt have the finesse that Asimov of Heinlein. He doesnt have the aura of humor of Niven. Docs strength is his raw energy. This book is like watching Yodas fight with Count Dooku at double-time. He overwhelms at times... ＜p＞ Another one of Docs strength is his mixture of science and gadgets. You are immediate placed in a world of sub-ether communicators, atomic weapons, tractor beams, spacer ships, space armor, and all the other props associated with old school SF. I now know where Roddenberry and Lucas got many of their terms and gadgets. ＜p＞ This tale is layered, and you can actually smell the intrigue and forces control other forces and nothing is what it seems. Wheels within wheels and plots within plots within plots. At times it can be complex. ＜p＞ Sometimes the action runs too fast, and I find myself panting for the characters. At times it is almost a melodrama, or a morality play. ＜p＞ While the dialogue might seem old-fashioned today, the stories themselves are timeless.
